My Philosophy:

Whilst we cannot argue that we have very modern forms of conventional intervention when it comes to health. We have much more sophisticated machines, surgeries, drugs and modern day screening than ever before. For many people it has undoubtedly saved lives and can also prolong life for some. However modern medicine still continues to treat the ‘symptom' of a disease whereas the older view of healing will continue to view the body as a whole which includes not only the body but the mind, emotions and the spirit.

The naturopathic view point will not fade away, it points the way to the future. This is not saying we walk away from conventional medicine if ever needed but we should always look for the cause of disease instead of treating a symptom. Much of the older naturopathic science is now gaining recognition in more modern scientific literature; this is leading us to a deeper understanding of healing and is allowing us much more choice in our own health and healing.

My philosophy – TOXINS:

Today more than ever before we are exposed to a huge variety of toxic chemicals that have been introduced over the past 50 years, most of which have not been tested for the long term effects.

We are seeing more chronic disease states such as; allergies, chronic fatigue, low immune systems, eczema and other skin problems and more as our systems become more overloaded and its capacity to detoxify is greatly reduced. A toxin can be classed as any compound which has a detrimental affect on our cells and tissues.

We have a fantastic system of detoxification via our liver, kidneys, colon, lungs and skin. Sometimes, though, there are just too many coming and not enough nutrients in order to help get them out.

Toxins are produced within us –

  • Our own by-products of our metabolism such as uric acid, lactic acid, etc.
  • From our colon (bowel), from bacteria, fungal cells and parasites which get absorbed into our blood stream. This area creates a huge amount of toxins for us to deal with. Good intestinal health is vital.

In our environment –

  • Chemicals that are sprayed over our crops
  • Genetically modified foods
  • Artificially coloured and flavoured foods
  • Chemicals from our household cleaning and hygiene products
  • Chemicals in our drinking water.

Also electromagnetically –

  • From electromagnetic frequencies from mobile phones, microwave ovens, etc.
  • Cordless phones
  • and much more...

So you see, it is very difficult to avoid these environmental toxins, but what we can do is limit our exposure to them and increase our immune system army to protect us from them.

Even in our new born babies it is found that traces of toxins have entered their bodies by way of the placenta and via breast feeding.

Symptoms:

Symptoms we call disease, are an expression of this toxic load as the body is attempting to throw it out in order to keep a natural balance.

One important area is our connective tissue (our living matrix), this is undoubtedly one of the most important systems that we have which is stretched across the whole of our body.

Everything that enters our body has to pass through it either to be taken to the cell or detoxified, and includes all our nutrients from food. Our cells' waste products also have to pass this way. It is likened to a large sieve keeping what we need and trying to get rid of what it doesn't in order to protect our cells. Our blood and lymph system carry nutrients and waste around the body which has passed through this tissue.

Unfortunately it can get clogged by the food choices we make (high sugars and white refined flours, hydrogenated and trans fats, alcohol, etc). These foods make our system too acidic aswell as chemicals, excessive protein intake, modern medications and prolonged stress.

Our bodies will always try to accommodate these toxins and help by throwing them out in some way, this is where we may experience symptoms such as -

Headaches Fatigue Skin Complaints
Bowel Problems Irritability & Stress Insomnia
Recurrent Infections Joint pain & Inflammation Hormonal imbalance (menopausal symptons, pmt, etc)

When we continuously treat these symptoms all we are doing is masking them and not treating the real cause. Our body will continue to communicate with us by showing us ‘symptoms' but if we continue to ignore these messages and avoid making dietary changes or continuously taking medications then the body will eventually lose its energy and ability to throw out these toxins in a purposeful way and can lead further to chronic diseases.

Whilst modern medicine has its place, we really need to ask ourselves if there is something that we can also do to prevent these symptoms. Modern medicine arguably may have prolonged life but we are seeing more chronic diseases in younger years!!

We have been taught to ‘mask' every symptom that we get but this is without doubt coming at a price on our health physically, mentally and emotionally.

My philosophy – PREVENTION:

Preventative health care is more important today than ever before as this bombardment needs an army which is our immune army to be able to deal with them effectively.

Our body is always trying to remain in a constant balance physically, emotionally and mentally, but it needs help in order for this to be achieved. What we put into our bodies will determine what we are going to get out of it.

Our health responsibility:

It is up to us to take our own responsibility for the state of our own health, if you want to be healthy, then you have to make healthier choices. Nature provides us with an array of nutrients for the optimum working of our bodies, ‘optimum' means optimum energy, detoxification and well being on all levels, we feel physically, mentally and emotional in balance.

We find not only vitamins and minerals but also phyto-chemicals and enzymes which are essential for all our cellular processes. We need to take these foods everyday not just once per week or when we ‘remember', plant life is our food.

Detoxification:

Using a colourful variety of fruits and vegetables each day will help us with detoxification, energy production and help us slow down the aging process as we increase our anti-oxidants which will protect us from free radical damage.

In the human body we produce free radical chemicals, but with the increase of chemicals in our environment we have more production of these chemicals. Free radicals cause damage to our cells and cause us to age. Plant foods are live foods to help give us life.

Organic produce:

Fresh organic produce will always be the optimum choice if it can be afforded. We see organic food now in most supermarkets but undoubtedly getting it fresh from local growers where you see exactly where it has come from will give us peace of mind that what we are eating is certainly organic and not sprayed with chemicals.

Water intake:

And not forgetting our water intake, as much as we are told to drink 2 litres of freshly filtered or bottled water daily, still there are many of us who simply ‘forget'. So keep a glass or a bottle near you each day, you will soon get into the habit and probably will feel less fatigued and irritable during the day.

Taking added supplements, which contain good levels of antioxidants, minerals and vitamins will help to support and give us more protection from our modern living. Superfoods which contain spirulina, wheat grass, chlorella, green barley, etc are not only rich in minerals but they contain ‘chlorophyll' which helps with detoxification, they are also rich in essential fats and proteins, taken every day offer even more protection.

Rejuvenating the body:

Detoxification is not a new concept; it has been used for centuries as a way of cleansing and rejuvenating the body, mind and spirit. Prolonged stress leads to a toxic body as we do not detoxify effectively under stressful conditions.

At least once per year working with a detoxification programme will help us to rid our body of unwanted waste material which can lead to chronic degenerative diseases.

Toxic chemicals:

We can also use non-toxic chemicals in our home. Chemicals in the home are absorbed through the skin and inhaled via the lungs, being more eco-friendly not only helps the environment but will also not be full of dangerous pollutants.

That also goes for our skin, remember that the skin will absorb many chemicals added to our toiletries which are hazardous so look out for chemical-free products.
